Willpower & perseverance : aut finisher, aut nihil!! (Endurance Trail Templiers 2010)

Image
After the UTMB race, my ‘Olympics’ that were cancelled after only 21kms/166kms late August 2010, times have been difficult. It took me a while to get better and a couple of weeks to go back into proper training, not just a means to expel my anger and pain. The first following race was in Chamonix again. It has been harrowing to go back, alone, to run another race than the UTMB. I was not even able to take the start of it: only a few hours after arriving in Chamonix, I was struck by a winter disease and ended up stuck in my hotel room for 2 days, unable to get out of my bed or eat. This was the fourth race of the season out of four that I was not able to complete. For this one, the last chance of the season, the bad luck was not over because of French strikes and the shortage of gas (a four hour drive). I almost couldn't go...
I. The feet and legs

Thursday 8.38pm, I manage to close my eyes and fall into a profound sleep only waking up on Friday 1am, a bit before my clock. I head tow…

Vouloir donc persévérer: aut finisher, aut nihil!! (Endurance Trail Templiers 2010)

Inspiration video...

A video that could be linked to my failed UTMB or my Endurance trail victory... I watch it all the time. No better inspiration... Enjoy...

Surrendering to a dream of a lifetime, to an existence’s ambition

Image
"Surrendering to a dream of a lifetime, to an existence’s ambition, just when you can touch it; only the ones who went through such desappointment know how it feels like" (Paul Michaud)
I had thought about the race a thousand times, gotten ready for anything (intestinal problems, wounds, broken gear, rain, etc) but not a single second had I imagined this…
Part I: I want

D-Day: as I slowly wake-up after a good night sleep, I hear a sound that I do not particularly care for: the sound of a car’s tires on a wet road. I head towards the window and  see pouring rain falling from the sky. I open my room’s door. My cousin who is with me is also awake and had also looked outside. We look at each other without exchanging a word for a moment. I am calm and serene (I live in Sweden so I'm used to bad weather!...) but still sigh strongly. He says: “All right, it’s 9am, the race starts at 6.30pm tonight, there’s still time to clear up”. A few minutes later, thunder bursts. Either th…

Partie I: je veux

D-day.

(Ursvik Ultra 10) Pardon me? You mean we're not in December? Cause it sure looks like it!

It's the season Grand Opening!!

For this first race of the season, I registered for a 75kms race by night in Stockholm, the Ursvik Ultra. I deemed it was a reasonable distance for a season (early) start and with almost no altitude change since I would not have had trained by then. I usually don't like when it is too short or too flat because it then goes way too fast for me but I did not really have many other choices. Moreover, for the first time, I have not entirely made the decision to do it on my own, I was advised to do it, given that it would be very good for a first and especially for my August Holy Grail, THE race of my season. Let us see if it changes anything on the finish line or not!!

D-7, troubles starts. First, just like many other European countries, Sweden has have its coldest winter since 1987 and even though this was March 21st, snow is still very present, saveguarded by negative temperatures. I therefore spent my week on the Weather Channel to spy on upcoming…
